History of the chasuble
A chasuble is a vestment worn by the clergy. It is normally worn with a clergy stole. Used by Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Lutheran, and other denominations. The
chasuble started life as a conical poncho, called in Latin a "casula" that was the common outer traveling garment in the late Roman Empire. It was simply a roughly oval piece of
cloth, with a round hole in the middle through which to pass the head, that fell below the knees on all sides. It had to be gathered up on the arms to allow the arms to be used
freely. Like most garments the chasuble has evolved but still remains quite traditional. There are many types of chasuble from the very plain to extremely ornate, lavished with hand
embroidery. Machine embroidery has now become popular due to low cost compared to hand work. Most fabrics used on chasubles are specialist to the church. Chasubles are
normally decorated with braids and trimmings. Types of chasuble are Gothic, Semi Gothic, Roman or fiddleback, Monastic. Colours for the chasuble are normally dependant on the
season (liturgical colours) White/Ivory/Gold, Green, Red, Purple, Black. We specialise in embroidered chasuble & stoles, hand embroidered chasubles, vestments, clerical shirts &,
church supplies. Bookmark www.chasuble.co - discounts available for multiple chasubles. View deals on chasubles at twitter. The pictures of chasubles on this website are subject
